Nelson Principal’s Association

Welcome to the Nelson Principal Association (NPA) website. The Nelson region is situated at the top of the South Island of New Zealand. We have 43 primary intermediate and area school principals in our association. Schools Range in size from 40 children to 600 children.

The association provides a professional hub for principals, providing professional development, pastoral and collegial support and social gathering for its members.

The association has an annual conference for its member held at Lake Rotoiti. This residential conference is a collegial time for Principals as well providing a quality programme of professional development. Each year the conference is organised by a regional cluster within our association.

The association along with its wonderful sponsors provides study and conference grant for our members. The Programmed Property Services Study Grant is to allow Principals to carry out some kind of study, either through a tertiary institution, as part of sabbatical leave study, or just in an area of interest. Recipients of this award present their findings at our annual conference and their presentation is then posted on the study award page of our website. Our ASB Conference Awards provide two grants to help pay the costs for a principal to attend any educational conference outside our region/ country. One of the award is specifically for principals of U1 to 3 schools (up to 150 children). Principals can download an application form on this website.

Each term the association organises professional development opportunities for Principals. These include guest speakers, bus tours, or workshops on specific subjects. The recent property and curriculum in action bus tours have been very popular and principals have enjoyed the opportunity to visits colleagues school throughout the region.

The NPA also provides a voice for local principals with excellent relationships with the Canterbury University, Nick Smith our local member of parliament, our Nelson Regional Ministry of Education office and other local government and business leaders.
